Organical Gardens

We began to set up gardens as soon as we got here, in September 2009, right behind Sobonana Lodge. At first we had a carrot bed, some gemsquash, eggplants, tomatoes and basil going. But our makeshift fence got constantly wrecked and pushed over by cows, and after we've been away in February 2009 for a month, the gardens were basically flattened when we came back. Now we have put up a new fence around the lodge and started planting again: spinach, onions, beetroot, lettuce, tomatos. So far, everything is growing nicely. The draught in winter makes it a bit difficult to water the gardens though. We hope to expand the gardens as the project grows ... but first, we need to get proper fences up!!

banana trees in boma area - baby banana trees (half eaten) - new gardens behind the lodge

eaten thornbush (!!) - eaten banana trees - eaten eggplant bush

cucumber flowers - mixed lettuce - tomatoes

basil - lettuce and tomato - red lettuce - lemon tree

eggplant - beetroot - parsley

The lower gardens have received proper fencing now. A little "kraal"-fence was built first (as proper fencing wire was not available yet) to protect the baby tomato plants. Some time later we got some fencing wire and finally made the lower gardens goat and sheep proof. The planting seasing is just about to start, and we have big plans for our gardens!
