Compost Toilet
There are different systems of compost toilets. We have decided not to build a longdrop for it takes too much effort to maintain - either you have to empty the toilet and dispose of the waste, or you use it until it's full, then move the toilet to another location ... So we thought a compost toilet might be a wiser idea.
Step number one: digging a hole. The hole is to be sloping downwards on one end. In the middle, we put in some stakes and tied a piece of shade cloth to them, to make a separation between the lower and the higher section of the toilet. The idea is, that all the waste comes in at the higher end. The solid waste gets held in the higher section by the shade cloth, while the liquid waste sickers through into the lower section and back into the ground. To help the solid waste to decompose more quickly, we add some compost every now and then. The system works well so far!
